Shakin’ Foundations in Philly

DSC01135 Stopped in to see our brethren in Philly again, and spent some time going over some new ideas for improving their stances and to get more power from their structures and steps. As usual, Sifu Kelly Knight and the crew at the Martial Art & Fitness Center were up for the training.

DSC01127 Over the weekend, we burned out quads and hammies, not to mention some calves and ankles along the way as we ran through a number of partner drills and exercises to help strengthen the legs and stances as well as to improve their stepping and mobility and explosion. Needless to say, some were walking a bit funny by the time we finished the weekend.

Had to intersperse some single-arm and double-arm chi sao drills amongst the leg work, so that everyone was able to make it through to Monday. But in the end, a great time was had by all. Another fabulous time with the guys from Philly! Always great to drop in and work with good people.

All’s Well in Wellington… still

Spent another great weekend with my student and good friend, Stu Dunn, and his New Zealand crew, as always, it was a good time for all as we trained together and had some fun.

Over the past couple of years, Stu has finally found a good core of great students who are putting in some good training and the nucleus of a solid school Is forming slowly on the Kapiti coast. Kudos for all who came out to see me and to share in the training. Even the weather, which was forecast to be cold, rainy and windy, shifted and we had nice sunny and clear days!

Dragon Dance Workshops a B-I-G Hit!!!

One of the main goals of the Academy has been to spread Chinese culture to the Australian public; not only through our Wing Chun kung fu training and classes, but also through other means such as our promotion of dragon dancing.

This month we launched a new dragon dance workshop, aimed at primary-school aged children, to teach them more about the Chinese culture and its many interesting aspects.

St Louis de Montforts Primary School in Aspendale, and Kardinia International College in Geelong were both receptive to our dragon dance workshops and the children at both schools were enthusiastic about learning more about the Chinese dragon, but even more so with our interactive and hands-on approach to teaching them how to do the dragon dance.

If recent emails and phone calls are any indication, I believe that our dragons will soon be out and about, throughout Melbourne-area schools, all through the year now and not just at Chinese New Year!

WELL DONE to ALL of the students (and teachers) who participated and shared in our initial Dragon Dance Workshops!!!
